60 Miles by Road or Rail
Tom Woolner, Bill Drummond, Will Daniels and Tom Price
Fri 20 Feb 2009 - Sat 28 Mar 2009
"60 miles by Road or Rail", an exhibition of work by four artists that reflects on the uneasy role of the Fishmarket in the regeneration of Northampton.
In 1980 The Northampton Development Corporation produced a single which was released nationally by EMI entitled "60 Miles by Road or Rail". The record was intended to generate publicity for the newly expanded town. 60 miles is the approximate commute to London.
The song title suggests that Northampton is a place best defined by its proximity to London!
The Main Gallery is home to TOM WOOLNER and BILL DRUMMOND
Tom's automated pigeons provide a rhythmic backdrop to the space as they repeatedly defecate over municipal flowerbeds, whilst Drummond's work is a call for action, engaging with Northampton's public and culminating in a large scale performance.
In Gallery Two, we have WILL DANIELS and TOM PRICE
Images from art history are recreated from torn and folded foil in Will's beautiful paintings, shown alongside is Tom Price's painstakingly observed naked bronze. As with the other two exhibiting artists they find the extraordinary in the mundane .
